Humpback whales spout jets of water into the air as they dive back into the icy sea, seals relax on the floating ice and penguins waddle along the icy shores: welcome to the Halal-certified cruise to Antarctica. This expedition cruise is breaking new ground by offering the first Halal cruise to the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula in 2026.
A Muslim-Friendly Cruise to Antarctica
Albatros Expeditions, known for exploring remote parts of the world, is embracing cultural diversity and responsible travel. The Scandinavian company aims to promote cultural understanding and inclusivity.
Starting in 2026, they will offer a fully Halal-certified kitchen in Antarctica, a first in expedition cruising. This initiative is led by Rashidah Lim, the Southeast Asia Business Development Manager and the only female Muslim Expedition Leader in the polar industry. She collaborates with Johanna from Marketing, Sara, the Middle East Business Development Manager, and Product Managers Janina and Steffan.
Although open to travelers of all faiths, the cruise will provide a Muslim-friendly environment with no pork or alcohol served and a policy against bringing outside food and beverages on board. The ship will feature Halal-certified dining, accredited by CrescentRating, and daily ladies-only hours in the sauna with views of the Antarctic sea ice.
A Halal Antarctica Cruise to the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula
The journey begins with a safety drill before Ocean Albatros departs from Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. The first major challenge is crossing the Drake Passage, known for its dangerous conditions and 15-meter-high waves.
The Ocean Albatros, designed for stability and equipped with 1A Highest Ice Class, will navigate through these rough waters. After crossing the Antarctic Convergence, where warm currents meet the cold Antarctic waters, there will be an increase in marine life sightings, including petrels, albatrosses, seals, whales, and penguins. If the weather allows, the ship will reach the South Shetland Islands by the third day.
Travelers will then explore the Antarctic Peninsula's glaciated islands and towering ice cliffs via inflatable zodiacs. They may see nesting penguins, humpback whales feeding on krill, and the rugged beauty of the South Shetland Islands, home to Gentoo and Chinstrap Penguins and Giant Petrels.
The exact destinations will vary based on ice conditions and weather, but the continent's stunning landscapes and wildlife, including icebergs, whales, seals, and penguins, will provide a breathtaking experience. The expedition team will offer lectures and activities for an enriching journey.
Unparalleled Comfort
With a capacity of just 175 guests, the Halal-certified cruise promises an intimate experience. The ship features balconies, hydraulic platforms, panoramic saunas, and jacuzzis overlooking polar waters, ensuring comfort and relaxation.
