Early morning on the second day, an expedition ship arrives in Lerwick. Shetland is made up of over 100 islands, 16 of which are permanently inhabited. The islands of Shetland are situated in the northernmost part of the United Kingdom. The islands are located approximately 300 km from the Scottish mainland.
Shetland’s history goes back to Neolithic time. Norn, a language derived from Old Norse and used in the islands until 1850, is an Old Norse-based dialect. The Viking influence was reflected in the placenames, dialects and other aspects of Shetland. Norse influence is evident throughout Shetland. This includes the Shetland Flag, and Up Helly Aa Fire Festival that takes place every year in mid-winter. Lerwick is a vibrant, energetic town, which thrives on tourism, the oil and gas industry, and green energy. Visit the Shetland Archives and Museum and take a stroll down the High Street lined with shops.
You can take an optional coach tour to see the highlights of Shetland.
