Svalbard's coast is a must-see for its wildlife, scenic beauty and rich history. This part of Svalbard, known as "Blubber Town", has long been an important center for whaling. The primary targets are oil-rich Bowhead Whales – the Arctic’s only resident baleen specie.
New Alesund is a "town" located in King's Bay, (Kongsfjorden), and well worth a visit. It is the world's northernmost civil settlement. The summer population is around 120 and the winter population of 35. It used to be the coal mining town of King's Bay, and it played a major role in Arctic exploration and exploitation.
Now, it is the center of Arctic research as well as one of the most northerly communities in the world. Post a postcard at the world's most northerly Post Office.
