Dinosaur Fossils Found in Antarctica

During an Antarctic expedition, scientists unearthed a fossilized dinosaur footprint dating back approximately 200 million years. The trace, about the size of a hand, belonged to an archosaur, as reported by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) in Hanover.

The discovery was made in January 2016 at the Helliwell Hills in northern Victoria Land, though it was only recently published in the journal "Polar Research," according to the German news agency. Andreas Läufer, leader of the BGR expedition, expressed surprise at finding dinosaur remains in northern Victoria Land, where previously only dinosaur bones had been found in southern Viktorialand.

Moreover, scientists also uncovered fossilized remains of forests about 1700 kilometers from the South Pole, suggesting that Antarctica was not the frozen continent we recognize today around 200 million years ago, Räufer noted.
