Passenger limits on Antarctic cruise ships for the season

A polar expedition cruise line, has announced a new policy limiting the number of passengers to 130 per vessel on its Antarctica voyages for the 2024-2025 season. This restriction will also apply to their Arctic voyages in 2025. The company's fleet currently includes two ships, the Sylvia Earle and Greg Mortimer, with a third, the Douglas Mawson, set to join in late 2025.

IAATO regulations currently cap passenger numbers on Antarctica voyages at 500, with vessels exceeding this limit prohibited from landing passengers ashore. CEO, Michael Heath, stated that the new capacity limits aim to enhance the small ship experience, offering more time off the ship and immersive activities, and reinforcing the company's reputation for intimate polar expeditions.

Heath emphasized the company's commitment to environmental responsibility, noting that it is among the few companies operating in the Antarctic and Arctic with fewer than 150 passengers. He reiterated its dedication to responsible travel and sustainable expedition leadership.

The 2024 Antarctic season will begin in October and run through April 2025.
